PROJECT OVERVIEW

In North Plano, Texas, there is a little bakery called Millstone Bakery. They take great satisfaction in only using the highest-quality, freshest ingredients. Its objective is to deliver excellent baking products that go above and beyond customer demands.

To achieve a successful redesign, numerous techniques were used throughout the process. The team’s use of the research approach allowed us to successfully create a user-friendly website that met Millstone Local Bakery’s requirements and expectations.

THE PROCESS

For the direction of our project, we applied a Double Diamond Design based on the Design Thinking methodology.

DISCOVER

Heuristic Evaluation

Members of our team conducted a heuristic analysis of websites to better understand what issues to concentrate on. Some of the findings of our investigation are listed below.

  • Visibility of system status: There doesn’t seem to be a clear direction or guidance to follow on this website.
  • Match between the system and the real world: content organization is done in a way that is not logical or intuitive, which makes it difficult for users to find what they are looking for.
  • Consistency and standards: The website uses inconsistent visual design, such as different font sizes, and repeats one item multiple times, which may cause confusion or frustration for users. The website doesn’t follow standard web design conventions, such as the placement of the logo in the top left corner and the use of a precise menu bar at the top of the screen.
  • Flexibility and Efficiency: It lacks customization options since the website doesn’t offer users the ability to customize their experience, such as saving their favorite items or customizing their orders.
  • Aesthetic and minimalist design: The website uses large images, which can create a clean and minimalist design, but the website is not visually appealing.

Competitive Analysis

By analyzing competitors’ products, we identified opportunities for innovation and differentiation and found that the features on the Millstone Bakery website should create a more useful information architecture.

User Interview

To better understand target users’ experiences with the current product, we conducted in-depth interviews with them during the research phase. We found that a lot of users had trouble finding products and believed the website was cluttered, time-consuming, and unclear. The resulting realization emphasized the necessity of the redesign’s streamlined and simple navigation flow.

DEFINE

Persona

Who is the user of the Millstone Bakery website?

Card Sorting

An open card sorting was conducted to get feedback from users on how to organize categories and pages on the website in order to enhance the website’s navigation.

Site Map

The site map incorporates the results of the card sorting and competitive analysis, giving the website’s user-friendliness and aesthetic appeal priority.
